Mission: Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary School’s mission is to provide a healthy, safe, orderly learning environment and a rich, meaning-centered instructional program through which all students will develop the academic and social skills necessary to be leaders and productive members in our changing society.

Component One: People and Programs

Create a “caring and connected” school climate.

Goal(s): Stevenson School will increase student safety, achievement and learning time in class.

Objective 1-1: To increase positive relationships between primary and intermediate students, a “Pirate Pals” program will be established. Primary and intermediate teachers will become “buddy” classes and plan activities together that will involve their students. This will result in less referrals to the principal’s office, an increase in the number of students who sign the Principal’s Log, and an increase in the number of interactions between primary and intermediate students.

Related activities: School-wide recess and assemblies, cross-age tutoring, intermediate students reading to primary classrooms, assisting with special projects throughout the year, teachers share ideas and plans during grade level and faculty meetings, as well as informal meetings

Resources needed: Teachers are given time during grade level and faculty meetings to schedule “Pirate Pals” opportunities

Objective 1-2: In order to decrease the number of office referrals by 1%, all staff will integrate and emphasize essential components of the PeaceBuilders & Peaceful Playground programs in all activities on campus.

Related activities: Review PeaceBuilder tenets with students, staff, and parents regularly through discipline assemblies at the beginning of the year, principal bulletins, PTA newsletter, staff training on Peaceful Playgrounds. All staff will award Praise Notes, Good Sport coupons for positive behaviors on the school yard and by using PeaceBuilder vocabulary in dealing with student discipline problems. Students will use Peaceful Playground Conflict Resolution vocabulary to resolve their own problems on the yard.

Budget: $500 for monthly awards

Objective 1-3: All staff will be trained to recognize signs of abuse and violence and will understand their mandated responsibilities in reporting such situations. This will enable staff to report cases of suspected child abuse and family violence in a timely manner. Appropriate paper work will be forwarded to authorities and copies will be filed in the student’s confidential file on campus.

Related activities: Staff training on topics will focus on child abuse, family violence, and educators’ responsibilities.

Component Two: Physical Environment

Create a physical environment that communicates respect for learning and for the individuals.

Goal(s): Increase student safety on campus.

Objective 2-1: All visitors will enter the campus through the front door, sign in, and wear a visitor’s badge until they sign out. Our visitor sign-in sheets will log all visitors.

Related activities: Along with information printed in monthly newsletters and the principal’s bulletin, office staff and yard supervisors will advise all visitors of these requirements.

Objective 2-2: Goal: Stevenson elementary will establish procedures for safe ingress to and egress from school.

Related activities: Continue the Safe Delivery program, train 4th and 5th grade students to act as the “valet” in the drop off zone, institute a safe delivery coordinator, “Walk Your Child to School Day”, teachers escort students to the gate at the end of the day, all students enter/exit through one gate, post a yard supervisor at the main gate for each start and dismissal times.

Resources needed: Training and monitoring of the Safe Delivery program by the Burbank Police Department, designated “drop off zone”

Budget: $7,000 for Safe Delivery Coordinator; $5,000 for Yard Supervisor for gate duty

Objective 2-3: All staff will be routinely advised of disaster/emergency preparedness procedures so that students, parents, and staff feel comfortable and safe during an emergency.

Related activities: Review procedures for an emergency, fire, and lock down drills at faculty meetings; participate in two district wide earthquake drills, monthly fire drills, and a reverse drill.
