Barnes and Noble will donate a percentage of every sale including sales at their Starbucks Café inside the store when you present a special Bookfair voucher that will be coming home in the Monday folders.

Two evenings of special events are planned at the Barnes & Noble Bookfair. Come out on Tuesday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for Think Fun Game Night. To go along with our Bookfair, please join us at on or both of our Dine-out Days. All day on Tuesday, April 21, California Pizza Kitchen in Burbank will be donating 20% of every check with a voucher to Stevenson Elementary. Then on Wednesday, April 22, Chevys in Burbank will be donating 25% of every check with voucher from opening to closing. These restaurant vouchers will also be sent home with your child and be available online.

Please don’t forget to save all of your receipts from Barnes and Noble, California Pizza Kitchen and Chevys so we can add them to the “Our School is Cool” program with the Media Center Mall. This program ends in May and winning schools in Burbank will be receiving cash prizes. We will have a box available both nights to turn in your receipts or you can bring them to the school office.

Miss Debbie Ginnetti

Miss Debbie Ginnetti

Dear Parents,

Due to the current budget crisis in the state, the teachers and I are looking for ways to be fiscally sound, frugal, and becoming less dependent on paper. Homework is an area where we can do just that. I have asked teachers to stop sending “homework packets” on Monday that need to be returned by Friday. Daily worksheets that need to be done at home will be lessened. We feel that reducing the amount of papers that are sent home will help us save on the cost of paper, ink, tone, and the wear and tear on our machines. During Parent/Teacher Conference Week (March 9-13), teachers will share the math website that you can access from home. The website is part of our new math series, which will enable you and your child to review and practice skills and concepts that have been taught at school.

The School District homework policy suggests following amounts of time:

  • Grades K and 1: 10-15 minutes daily
  • Grades 2 and 3: 15-20 minutes daily
  • Grades 4 and 5: 20-30 minutes daily

During this time, you can help your child review spelling words and math facts. In addition to the time allocated for homework, we recommend that each student read or be read to for 20 to 30 minutes each day. What would happen if one night a week the television was turned off and the family played board games (Scrabble, Monopoly, Chutes and Ladders, Candy Land, Clue, etc.)?

We believe that homework reinforces and extends basic skill development. It helps develop good study skills and responsibility. To help your child in their educational development try the following:

  • Set a regular time;
  • Choose a comfortable place that is free of distractions;
  • Have supplies and resources on hand;
  • Think of your self as a consultant;
  • Provide guidance.

Most importantly, help your child see homework as a valuable activity. Your interest alone confers importance to the task but children should see homework as something they do for themselves—not just for others’ approval.

As a parent, you were your child’s first teacher. Even while your child is in school, you still teach important lessons every day. Research shows that when parents and schools work together, students do better. I value the partnership between home and school.

We will continue to provide each student with a challenging and rigorous curriculum appropriate to his/her academic level.

Sincerely,
Debbie Ginnetti
