Congress to Decide This Week Whether Health and Education Are Among America’s Priorities in an Economic Stimulus Package

CONTACT YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVE TODAY!

Tomorrow, both the United States Senate and House of Representatives will be acting on a wide-ranging economic stimulus package. This legislation will provide much needed investment in the American economy through a variety of avenues. It is essential that the education and health initiatives that are currently major priorities in this legislation remain so.

Congress is in the midst of deciding our nation’s future. Tell them that any future must depend on the health and education of our children. Call your Representative and both Senators in Congress and let them know that you believe education and health must remain top priorities in the economic stimulus package.

Since Congress will be acting on this legislation as early as tomorrow, we encourage you to call your members of Congress.

With his wife Nina by his side, local restaurant owner Kevin McCarney was honored by the FFS booster organization last month for his continued support of Stevenson Elementary, the alma mater of his two daughters, Catelyn and Grace McCarney, who both currently attend John Burroughs High School in Burbank.

Former FFS president Jessica Good had this to say about the McCarneys:
“We thank Kevin and Nina McCarney for their continued support of Families For Stevenson. Community support is so important in keeping the mission of FFS going, and we are grateful that they continue to give back year after year.”

Rather than receiving the award directly from an FFS board member, it was previously arranged that a group of students would present the McCarneys with the award using their own added touch. Fifth graders Britta Good, Michael Kalisz, Anna Brown, and Calista Whitecotton took turns reading them a poem aloud entitled, “A Little More.”

A Little More
We’d say simply “Thank you”
But it doesn’t seem enough
To give your generosity its due
Is quite frankly a little tough

You go above and beyond
Year after year after year
And it’s in how we respond
That makes our feelings plainly clear

Our spirits yearn for a little lift
From reading writing and ‘rithmetic rules
Because of your glorious gift
Art is now taugh in our school

We dance, we draw we paint we sing,
Our classrooms are never a bore
Just “thank you” seems an empty thing
We hope this poem offers just a Little More!

The mission of FFS is to raise money to fund Art, Music, Dance and other specialty programs. The lack of Arts Education funding in public schools today puts more pressure than ever on parent groups like FFS to make up the shortfall. Without the annual fundraising FFS does and without the help of community business supporters like Poquito Mas, our children would not get to experience the enriching programs that they do here at Stevenson.

Upon receiving the award, whose inscription reads:

Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary School Appreciation Award
Presented To Kevin McCarney and Poquito Mas
In Honor Of Your Many Years of Continued Support
Thank You

an appreciative Mc Carney exclaimed, “This will hang in the restaurant.”

Don’t forget: Poquito Mas Dine-Out Day, a fundraiser for FFS, will be held on Sunday, March 15th!

Take your family and friends out to Poquito Mas, the Original Baja Taco Stand, for delicious fresh Mexican cuisine. “Stevenson Day” Sunday, March 15th.

Stevenson is very thankful for this annual fundraiser, with a generous portion of proceeds from the day being donated to FFS. Poquito Mas is located at 2635 West Olive @ Naomi Street.
