From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents,
Parent-Teacher conferences are one of the best opportunities to establish clear home-school communication. The Stevenson staff appreciates the opportunity to work closely with parents to effectively support the personal growth and learning of each student at school. At the conference, teachers will focus on fostering strong parent-teacher partnerships, sharing both parent and teacher information regarding each student, asking clarifying questions, reviewing student progress, and setting appropriate learning and personal development goals.
Conferences must take place during a very limited amount of time, approximately 20 minutes. Your child’s teacher will come to the conference prepared to share specific information with you about your child’s academic and social growth. It is important that you come to the conference ready to take notes and to share pertinent information with your child’s teacher. If your child has been included in the conference, it is important that he or she has spent time with you reviewing his or her efforts thus far, with some academic and social goals in mind. Here are some helpful tips for a successful conference with your child’s teacher:
Before the Conference
- Sit down with your children and ask them to rate their academic progress in each of the subject areas. (reading, math, social studies, science)
- Emphasize with your child that teachers don’t just give grades; students earn them.
- Did they turn in all their homework?
- What were their grades on class work and tests?
- Did they actively participate in class discussions?
- Ask your child if there is anything that has been interfering with their learning.
- Remember to record all this information and then take it with you to the conference.
At the Conference
- Remember this is just one of many conferences for the teacher. PLEASE BE ON TIME.
- Listen carefully to everything the teacher says and take notes for future reference.
- If you don’t understand something, ask to have it explained.
- Share any concerns you may have about your child’s ability, academic progress, and social growth.
- Ask for suggestions for things you can do at home to help your child.
After the Conference
- Talk with your child about the conference. Share any positive comments the teacher made. Let your child know how proud you are of him or her!
- Follow up with any suggestions you and the teacher agreed upon.
- Be sure to call the teacher any time you have a question or concern
